Ajay is a 1985 Indian Kannada movie directed by Puttanna Kanagal and written by V. Somashekar, based on a novel of the same name by Shivaram Karanth. Produced at the cost of Rs. 60 lakhs, it stars Anant Nag as Ajay, Bharathi as his love interest and T. S. Nagabharana as his father in-law who wants to marry him off to a girl against his will. The film also stars Vishnuvardhan, Ramesh Bhat, V. Ravichandran and Shankar Nag as the characters of the antagonist. The music was composed by Upendra Kumar and lyrics were written by Veeradevi. When she rejects him as she loves another for whom she works as a maid as his father wants her to marry him to a girl who belongs to big family; he refuses and leaves the place. When he returns, he learns that her lover has married another girl and she gets traumatized. Ajay takes care of her and decides to marry her. Meanwhile, Malathi's father attempts suicide. Ajay brings him home and marries Malathi in his absence which is opposed by the father-in-law (T S Nagabharana). He throws out both of them from home. Ajay works outside the village for income for his wife and son. After few years, they return home unwillingly to convince Malathi's father to accept their presence in the house. The daughter-in-law (Smita Patil) hates them; in spite of that they change her heart in due course of time. His wife tries hard to gain respect of her father-in-law, but fails. After knowing the reasons for Ajay's behavior he accepts him as his son-in-law, but then misunderstandings arise between them about their relationship which are later solved by the village sub-magistrate (V Ravichandran).The music was composed by Upendra Kumar with lyrics by Veeradevi.
