It is an excellent example of Manto's first-hand experience, which was not first but second hand, i.e., he actually saw something on another person first hand before he wrote about it. His describing without having seen is not uncommon but his writing without having seen is astonishingly rare. This is what makes "Sehar" an important movie. It also portrays a rare love story which united a couple from different faiths, having a different perspective of life and living under very difficult circumstances. The director has very well succeeded in capturing the essence of Manto's art and has demonstrated an excellent example of his creative genius. Main Characters: Saadat Hasan Manto – Writer, political activist and short story writer as well as film critic. He was awarded Padma Bhushan for his services to literature and arts in 1992. His daughter Salima Hashmi played her father's role in the movie. Safar Jangi Agha Hashmat Begum – Saadat Manto's first wife and also his muse. She was an Urdu and English writer and translator, as well as film critic and playwright. Shah Fareed – Saadat Hasan Manto's younger brother and a renowned poet. He passed away in 1973. Syed Nazir Hussain – Manto's uncle, who provided support to him during his early career as a political activist. He was the president of the All-India Muslim League (AIML) from 1948 to 1953 and became its honorary President upon his death in 1956. Umrao Jaan – Manto's mother. She died when he was only eight years old. Shabnam – Safar Begum's sister, who married Najm-ud-Din Shahabadi, one of the top lawyers in Lahore, Pakistan. Qaisra – Safar Begum's cousin. She was an activist for women's rights and married to Safdar Aaliqam, a journalist and editor of Daily Imroz (Imroz Daily).
