His Ry Of Medieval India By Satish Chandra .pdf Free Download Ebook

History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra Pdf Download. Introduction: This book is a product of long and laborious research covering a wide range of sources relating to the period from 1192-1526 CE. In one sense, it is a sequel to my Early History of India published in 1961, carrying on the story from where I left off in 1206. After about 1700 years, there have been so many changes in technology and society -- it would be difficult for people to imagine what life was like in medieval times! Not only has the world changed but so have concepts such as nationality or trade or religion, all these things are different now from when they were centuries ago. So how can we describe medieval India? The most popular understanding of the word "medieval" is associated with the Middle Ages in Europe, which was a time of great intellectual and artistic progress. There were universities and libraries, newly invented printing presses churning out books, the Renaissance, etc. It was also a time of great religious strife between Christians and Muslims. I had always wondered why medieval India did not go through similar developments. Why were there no universities or printing presses here? What had gone wrong? I was not alone in asking these questions; Jawaharlal Nehru too wondered about this when he wrote his Glimpses of World History (1934). He believed that India had lost its way for want of a unifying and integrating force, and asked why India did not respond to western culture in the same way as China. It was left to historians to find answers and they pointed out that there were differences between Medieval Europe and Medieval India. The latter belonged to a region which was not as well developed as the West. Moreover, there were no powerful dynasties such as those which ruled France or Britain or Spain back then, no Charlemagnes or Henry Vs. So why was there no progress? The answer was not to be found in the concept of medieval but in the concept of India. India had many languages, different sects, regional differences -- it lacked a common political framework. If we think of Europe we tend to think of France and Britain and Germany and Spain merging into a larger entity called Europe; this is only possible if there is some agreement about what their common future will be. But India has always remained divided and at loggerheads with itself and hence has never been able to focus on new ideas or new ways of doing things. My book has therefore tried to find the factors which led to medieval India having no Renaissance or Age of Enlightenment, finding that there were in fact many similarities in the conditions of both societies. The differences between India and Europe were not inherent in medieval times but came into being much later. About Author Satish Chandra is an expert on Eastern history and Hinduism.
